With the BIOTRAIN project, an extensive pilot survey on the biological transformation of the industrial value chain was started under the management of Fraunhofer IPA on the 1st of November 2017. Other members of the project consortium are the Fraunhofer institutes IGB, IML, IWM, IPT and IWU. The project aims at analyzing the potential and requirements associated with implementing biological transformation, particularly regarding a sustainable economy.
Renowned stakeholders from science, industry, society and politics will be actively involved in realizing the project.
Interviews with outstanding experts from diverse fields will determine the potential of biological transformation to solve macro- and micro-economic challenges.
Based on this, fundamental and enabling technologies for the transformation process will be identified and compared with demands.
The specific research requirements ascertained through comparing potential and demands will be the start signal to develop highly-efficient biointelligent value-adding systems. These will supply valuable impulses for organizing the transformation process successfully. The results of the pilot survey will be presented at a final project conference at the Fraunhofer Forum in Berlin on the 27th of June 2018.
